With all the hype around Zello communities I decided to give it a try.
Unfortunately as reviews go this one will be rather short. Setting up Zello on my cellphone and attaching to a small group in our area was a piece of cake. So far so good. I mean walkie talkie access in my hand is better than carrying two devices after all.
After a single shift however, I was zello'ed out. Perhaps it was the jolt of my cellphone randomly speaking to me all the time, or the fumbling to get my screen lock off on my iPhone so that I could actually interact but it was just too intrusive. Voice quality was acceptable and even outdoors it was clear enough to hear. The drain on battery life was a little disappointing but I suppose that's a trade off between functionality and battery life - not the end of the world.
Personally, I just couldn't get used to it. Neighborhood Watches across South Africa however have embraced Zello as a means of communication at a cost effective level so the verdict would have to be that it's worth trying. If you can get used to your phone randomly talking to you and integrate it into your arsenal I recon it's a good tool to have.
